Scriptural References
We know that Christ showered His love on those who could not help themselves. We also can clearly see God's heart for these children from His written word:
Psalm 34:18 "The Lord is close to the brokenhearted and saves those who are crushed in spirit."
Psalm 68:5 "A father to the fatherless, a defender of widows, is God in his holy dwelling."
Psalm 146:9 "The Lord watches over the alien and sustains the fatherless and the widow, but he frustrates the ways of the wicked."
Proverbs 23:10-11 "Do not move an ancient boundary stone or encroach on the fields of the fatherless, for their Defender is strong; he will take up their case against you."
Knowing that God cares for the orphans is not enough. God inspired James to tell us "Do not merely listen to the word and so deceive yourselves. Do what it says." (James 1:22) What does God say we should do?
Deuteronomy 10: 17-19 " For the LORD your God is God of gods and Lord of lords, the great God, mighty and awesome, who shows no partiality and accepts no bribes. He defends the cause of the fatherless and the widow, and loves the alien, giving him food and clothing. And you are to love those who are aliens, for you yourselves were aliens in Egypt."
Isaiah 1:16-17 "Wash and make yourselves clean. Take you evil deeds out of my sight! Stop doing wrong, learn to do right! Seek justice, encourage the oppressed. Defend the cause of the fatherless, plead the case of the widow."
James 1:27 "Religion that God our Father accepts as pure and faultless is this: to look after orphans and widows in their distress and to keep oneself from being polluted by the world."
